I just discovered the wonderfully idiotic Mongol Rally, a trip where you take a car that shouldn't be on the road and drive it from the UK to Mongolia.

It looks like it's good fun, but I was wondering if there was anything like it in the US (or Canada, for that matters)...

Anyone ever heard of something similar?

We're so far up our own asses when it comes to cars/car legalities/rallies, that I highly doubt anyone does this here.

I'm amazed that this is legal in Europe, and nobody is doing it in the ''land of the free''.

That, or they don't publicize; google search didn't turn up anything yet.

There are many versions of the Mongol rally from well The Mongol Rally itself, the Road to Mandalay Endurance Rally with vehicles from (present race) 1907 up to 2011.

The 7th Flying Scotsman April 2015

The 2nd Trans America Challenge 2015

The 2nd Alpine Trial 2015

The Sahara Challenge 2015

The 6th Peking to Paris Motor Challenge 2016

Rally of the Incas 2016

There is a Land Rover one where they drive early Landies out to North Africa with food, medicine and supplies and leave them there and either fly back or get a lift back in one of the other vehicles.

Yeah, this is sketchy as hell. I vote to ban any mention of the Mongol Rally or anything similar on Oppo.

On a less sarcastic note, a few of us have started preliminary plans for a 2017 Oppo entry.

Of the one's I listed below the one I think you may be interested in is

http://www.endurorally.com/pages/the-2nd-…

Starts in Halifax, Nova Scotia and finishes in San Francisco, California in June 2015.

The Trans-America Challenge is an exciting classic car rally from sea to shining sea, through the spectacular sights of the 'land of the free and the home of the brave', organised by the hugely experienced ERA team with over 65 international events under their belt.

The journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the east coast of Canada, to San Francisco on the west coast of the United States will take the participants through some of the best and most spectacular scenery and roads that both the Canada and the United States has to offer in the company of fellow enthusiasts.

Entries for the 2nd Trans-America Challenge are arriving at the Rally Office from as far afield as Japan and America. Paul and Sandra Merryweather who led our first Trans-Am into Vancouver have returned with their Mercedes 450SL; Richard and Isobel Squire have entered a Shelby Mustang GT350. The second placed crew in 2012, Phil Garratt and Kieron Brown, who drove an E-Type, and who went on to win the Peking to Paris in a Fangio-spec Chevrolet Coupe, have entered again... returning this time with a most unusual car choice: a Triumph Stag. This surprised us so much we went away to drill down into the archives on this website and couldn't see any other attempt to finish a rally in a Triumph Stag, so, Triumph history of sorts could be made on this event. Michael Eatough and Morgan Roberts and have entered a Fintail Mercedes; Marc Binkmeyer from America is investigating car options; and Kazuyuki Sugiyama from Japan is also looking for an ideal car.

I'm looking for something closer to home (same continent would be good enough), though.

I loved the idea where you could take an emergency vehicle in the UK and bring it in Mongolia.

Trans America seems nice, but it's to fancy for my tastes (1927 Bentley 4 and a half litre...). I'm looking for something much more beater-esque.

Clarkson once told an American audience member on Top Gear "Welcome to the free world, you'll like it here." Aside from the crazy taxes, I think he's right.

By we and here, I meant the US. An Oppo rally, nevermind just an entry, on the other hand would be awesome.

and speeding cameras, and average speed roads, and retarded license scheme (anything over 2 litre is basically luxury), and fuel prices, and mandatory inspections...

They have their strengths, but we certainly are more lax when it comes to car.

Except for importing and the fact that they can drive insane stuff like Radicals and Ascaris there, while we can't.

I dare say there is a more 'Mongol Rally' sort of event also.

I once participated in a beater rally, the Carbagerun. It was January 2013, and we drove our €500 Subaru from the Netherlands to the Austrian Alps, drove a number of days through the Alps all the way to Slovenia, and went back home. About one hundred €500 vehicles participated.

It's totally something you can arrange yourself, although it will take time to plan. We should do a European version!

"retarded license scheme (anything over 2 litre is basically luxury)"

Wha? Last I checked, I didn't need a special licence to operate a two-litre-or-above car.

The main issues come from insurance (land of the "I'll sue you!") and getting permission to drive on private and federally protected lands. There's no way you're getting across the US in a car without driving on Federally protected land and/or private land. There's also no way you're going to get permission to run a bunch of beater rally cars across said land.

Sorry, I translated in my mind as I wrote, should have double-checked.

Exactly. Even if there was a way to close a stretch of road for this to happen, someone would complain about noise or the environmental impact, etc.

There was the BABE rally from NY to New Orleans, it’s gone now, Asphault Adventures had 2 rallys explore the shore & Saints to sinners, but lack of intrest stopped the 3rd. N. American Banger Rally Assoc on face book is trying to get a BABE style rally going again.
